Most famous painters of the 19th century seem to be men, besides a few exceptions. Yet there were so many fantastic female artists!
I am not an art scientist, just a retired psychotrauma counseler – and an art lover. An amateur who collects unknown or forgotten female masters of the 19th and early 20th century. My personal mission is to have these paintings cleaned, revarnished, restored if necessary and to put them and their makers in the spotlight. They deserve to be seen, to be known and to be enjoyed. The focus is on Europe.
In my online gallery you will find examples of these paintings. Some are for sale, others are not. They belong to my collection and they give me a lot of joy. I hope you will enjoy them too. Come and have a look.
On the menu page ‘female masters‘ you will find information about many more female masters. Not the famous ones like Thérèse Schwartze, Laura Knight, Mary Cassatt or Berthe Morisot, but equally talented women who were sadly forgotten, or overshadowed by their famous husbands, unknown to the general public. Per country, you will find them classified in alphabetical order by their surname. By putting them in the spotlight, I want to honour their importance.
I’ve only just started this website, so the information will grow steadily. Do you think I should add someone, suggestions are welcome!
